(pdf 28.5KB) Board biographiesKirsten AlexanderI am a founding member of MTL and have enjoyed helping Jo McDonald see the company grow from an idea to a reality over the last five years. I joined the MTL Board at its inception and was appointed Chair of MTL in 2008. I have danced since I was eight years old and have found that my involvement with MTL has given me renewed inspiration and enjoyment in dancing. In particular, the opportunities provided by Jo and the talented MTL choreographers to explore and learn different choreography and develop my skills as a dancer, have reinforced my goal to continue dancing throughout my life. My work on the MTL board and performing with MTL gives me the opportunity
to give something back to the community. I feel strongly that our community
is richer and healthier for its involvement in the arts. I am committed
to providing performance and training opportunities through MTL, to inspire
and encourage people to continue dancing throughout their lives, by contributing
my organisational, management and planning skills gained as a professional
engineer. Dance is now a constant part of my family life, with two young aspiring dancers happy to give impromptu performances whenever the opportunity arises! I am thankful that my husband and children share my interest and enthusiasm for dance. I believe that MTL's successful Black Coffee season has provided a great opportunity to grow the organisation and expand both its audience and membership. I believe that Jo's vision for the organisation is inspired and achievable and look forward to seeing MTL continue to grow. Lyn FlahertyI was introduced to MTL at an Australian Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) Sector Connect Lunch in August 2008 where I met Jo McDonald. Inspired by Jo's vision, contagious enthusiasm and desire to offer dance classes to thirty-something women who had stopped dancing in their teenage years; I decided to nominate for the MTL Board in October 2008. I danced up until Year 10 at high school and am an avid fan of Channel Ten's So you think you can dance? I often wonder what happens to contestants after the show and believe strongly that MTL has the potential to grow through the increased interest being generated by the show. MTL's successful Fringe 2009 season of Black Coffee has rekindled my passion to get back to dancing and perhaps perform again (this is a long term goal!) Being of MTL's board gives me an opportunity to give something back to the community in a tangible way by using my knowledge and experience in planning, marketing, communications and grant writing gained within both the professional services and not-for-profit sectors. Dancing is a daily part of my life with an active seven year old daughter who is always singing, dancing and making up performances for family and friends. I am excited by MTL's growth in the past five years and believe that Jo's long term vision for the organisation is achievable with the continued assistance of the organisation's passionate dancers and volunteers and by securing funding for specific programs and developing a suite of performance packages for different target markets. Karen GuazzelliI am a Senior Associate at commercial law firm, Fisher Jeffries, and have been practising in the area of commercial litigation for over 5 years. Along with a law degree from the University of Adelaide, I also hold a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), majoring in Italian. I first found out about Move Through Life in early 2009 through AbaF, which currently runs its office out of Fisher Jeffries' premises. After meeting with Jo McDonald and Kirsten Alexander and learning more about the company, I decided to nominate for the MTL Board. I became a board member in August 2009. I have been a dancer for over 25 years, having started at the age of
3 (first with jazz and soon after tap, ballet and contemporary). Despite
an often substantial workload, the pressures of every day life, and some
ever-increasing aches and pains which remind me that I am no longer a
teenager, I continue to dance, teach and perform on a regular basis. I
understand the physical, creative and mental release and satisfaction
that dance can bring and, for that reason, found that the vision, values
and aims of Move Through Life really resonated. Joining the Board of MTL
represents a unique opportunity for me to bring together my legal expertise
and love of dance and to promote amongst others participation in an activity
which I know to be both fulfilling and beneficial. Jo McDonaldI founded Move Through Life in 2004, inspired by the talent and artistry of the dancers who took class with me. This was a time of transition for me, as I shifted from a career as a researcher in workforce development for alcohol and drug workers, to follow my fascination with the arts. Inspired by the artists I met working for Country Arts SA, I was convinced that it was possible, and important, for dance to be a lifelong pursuit. I have an incredible interest in people, and in building a sense of belonging. I happily straddle the divide of the creative and the logical, being equally comfortable in the dance studio as I am in front of my PC working on schedules and budgets. This duality is a blessing, and sometimes a challenge, but one I can't avoid as it's part of my nature. The values and philosophy that I bring to Move Through Life include the pursuit of creativity, expansion of knowledge, the importance of nurturing and challenging people, being part of a close-knit community, and giving things a go, even when you feel completely ill-equipped to take on the challenge. Dive in the deep end I say, it's the best way to learn. I've had the opportunity to learn many things along my journey and have collected a Graduate Diploma in Creative Industries (Dance Teaching), an Honours degree in psychology, a Bachelor of Science and certificates in commercial music (performance) and workplace assessment and training. Some of my professional interests include organisational and performance psychology, arts and cultural management and choreography. In my personal world, my greatest joy is spending time with my little girl, getting up early to catch the world waking up, playing and listening to music, and attempting to find the elusive secret of happiness. Simon RobinsonBorn in Bordertown on Valentines day 1972, I had a mix of rural and city life growing up, spending nine of my first 17 years in Mount Gambier, Bordertown and Mt Compass. After finishing high school I graduated from Flinders University with
a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) and Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies).
As extra curricular activity I was heavily involved in the Flinders University
Baseball Club as coach, player, treasurer for the duration of my degree
and beyond, later being awarded life membership of the club. It was a
this time I had my first taste of involvement in the arts as a patron
of the SA Youth Theatre Company (SA YTC) working with producer Scott Treloar
and the likes of Kris Stewart, Kynan Johns and Michelle Nightingale. After working briefly as an accountant for chartered firm Deloitte Touche
Tohmatsu I joined the South Australian Brewing Company as an analyst and
worked my way through a range of roles including Demand Planning, Sales
Planning, Trade Marketing Manager until moving to Sydney in 2000. Here
I experienced a range of national positions and project management roles
before returning to Adelaide with Mitsubishi Motors (MMAL) in 2003. After
three years with MMAL and helping them launch the ill fated 380 and running
the Sales Planning and Distribution function, I returned to the FMCG industry
with Coca Cola Amatil (CCA) in their Equipment Service Division. After
one successful year managing South Australia, I now run the National Equipment
Service Division and am focussed on transforming this $75M division into
one able to build competitive advantage for the CCA beverage portfolio. I am married to Michelle and have two boys Alex (7) and Matthew (5). I hope to bring some financial and marketing experience to the board and learn more about being a board member.
