Move Through Life Enews May 2008

Welcome

It's been a busy year so far, and time has been flying.   Over the last nine weeks, there has been lots of energy in the Glengowrie studio as the company class has come to life.  Much of our behind the scenes energy is being channelled into preparations for our next performance project, Black Coffee, and we are continuing to build a solid foundation for the organisation.

Read on for more ....

FUNDRAISING
Money makes the world go round, as they sing in Cabaret, and wouldn't it be nice to have that in excess.  Well, since we don't, we have a number of fundraising activities coming up.  We are aiming to raise $6,000 for Black Coffee so that we can realise the full potential of the project (which will have a few twists and turns just to spice things up).

Movie Fundraiser
The first event on our fundraising calendar is a movie night at the Wallis Mitcham Cinema.

I'm not going to write the name of the movie, because I don't want this email to bounce as spam, but the movie features the further exploits of Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes, based on the autobiographical columns written by Candace Bushnell.  You know the one - ... IN THE CITY.

6.45pm, Friday 6 June
Wallis Mitcham Cinema
6/119 Belair Road, Torrens Park

Tickets $12, or you can purchase a bunch of tickets and get freebies:
10 tix for $120 (1 ticket free)
20 tix for $240 (2 tickets free)

Tickets go on sale Thursday 8 May.  Tickets can be purchased directly through Move Through Life by sending a completed order form (attached) and payment.

For existing MTL members and participants, there is an option to be invoiced for the 10 or 20 tickets to give you a chance to sell them to family, friends, workmates etc before paying.  Even better, you can encourage them to buy their own books to secure a free ticket for themselves.

Chance to win prize valued at $75
Whoever sells the most tickets will win a prize valued at $75, which they can take as a registration for Black Coffee, a 6-week block of company class or 3 free adult tickets to Black Coffee

Sausage Sizzle
How many of you like going to Harvey Norman or Bunnings on a weekend just for the fundraising sausages?  If you're one of those people (like me) then make sure you head down to Harvey Norman in over the weekend 29-30 November, because Move Through Life will be there selling sausages and handing out fliers to promote Black Coffee.  If you're free on that weekend and want to help out, email melissa.hill@movethroughlife.org.au

Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November
Harvy Norman Marion
882-886 Marion Road

BLACK COFFEE

The jazz series of classes for company class have been underway for three weeks, and we have another nine to ensure the dancers have the cool, snappy style of 1950s jazz club dancers.

Dance, Music, Acting
We are waiting on the outcome of our submission to the Arts SA Community Arts Development Fund to engage Catherine Carter as a dramaturg.  Catherine has extensive experience, including being Artistic Director of the Come Out festival from 1999-2001, working as a Creative Consultant with Leigh Warren & Dancers for Chasing Space, and lecturing in voice at AC Arts.  With Catherine on board, we'll be able to take the performance abilities of our dancers to a whole new level.  Catherine will be running acting workshops, contributing to development of vignettes (designed to take the audience beyond the stage and into the offstage persona of the performa), and coaching the cast during the rehearsal period.

The jazz band for the project is the Charlie Horst Quintet, formed especially for the project, and featuring the double bass ofy Dave Blackmore.  We're still looking for some horn players though - a sax and/or trumpet would be great.

There may also be some roles for actors.  Some movement ability would be great, but is not necessary.

Production Team
For the first time, we will be working with a close-knit design team from the very beginning of the creative development of a project.  So far we have Rachel Jones and Alia Guidance, both students in the Advanced Diploma of Design for Live Events at AC Arts, who will work on the costume and set design.  Kirsty Duncan will again be lending her sophisticated graphic design skills. Kirsty and Kirsten Alexander are also part of the costume and set design team.

There are a number of other production team positions we are looking to fill.  Volunteering for the MTL production team is a great way to gain theatrical, events or marketing experience in a hands on way. Plus it's fun!!  And you get to see the show for free, watch some rehearsals and meet all the dancers.

Dance: Cast Director, Rehearsal Director
Technical: Lighting Designer, Lighting Technician
Front of House: Front of House Manager, Ushers, Bar Staff
Costumes: Sewers, Wardrobe Supervisor, Dressers
Backstage: Stage Manager, Set Builders/Collectors, Stage Hands

If you are interested in one of these roles, please email jo.mcdonald@movethroughlife.org.au

Job descriptions will soon be available at www.movethroughlife.org.au

Search for Partners
Move Through Life is looking to develop business partnerships with local organisations for Black Coffee.  In particular, we are seeking a coffee company to be a full presenting partner.  The project is a great opportunity for local businesses to improve their market position, reputation, staff benefits and community profile.

If you have a business, or know someone with a business that is looking to raise their profile in a way that is more creative and perhaps more credible than advertising, please contact jo.mcdonald@movethroughlife.org.au to discuss the possibilities.

DANCE INFORMA

One of our founding dancers, Deb Searle (nee Foster) now runs an online dance magazine called DANCE informa.  Subscription to the bimonthly magazine is free, and it is bursting with dance industry titbits, including articles on choreography, health, funding and interviews with stars of the dance world - there will be an interview with Jack and Rhys from So You Think You Can Dance in the next issue, due out in June.

DANCE informa has been a great supporter of Move Through Life, offering editorial and free advertising.  Oh, and I've been doing some writing for the magazine - reviews, articles and interviews.  I have an interview with Leigh Warren in the next issue, and in the last couple of issues have written about funding for dance and lifelong involvement in dance.

BOARD UPDATE

Strategic Plan
The Board of Move Through Life has been doing a lot of thinking and soul searching, writing a new strategic plan.  The bones are there, but it isn't finished yet.  I'll let you know when it is completed - it'll be available on our website.  I can let you in on a few key pieces of info now though.  We have a new vision, more streamlined values and six broad goals.  Keep in mind this is still a work in progress:

Vision

First choice in training and performance for adult dancers within a creative and progressive team.

Values

Active participation

Inclusion

Commitment

Positive Lifestyle

Goals

To establish a competitive dance company

To establish a sustained and growing organisation

To build a reputation and a recognisable brand

To upskill all members and attract additional, valuable individuals.

To provide an emotionally and physically safe environment

To contribute to the broader community

Board Development
The Board has decided to hold off recruiting new members until the next Annual General Meeting, which will be held in late August.  We are still looking to recruit financial, legal, planning, business development, marketing and arts industry expertise, and have had a some promising expressions of interest.

Stay tuned for details of the function we'll be holding in July to introduce MTL to people interested in joining our board.  If you're interested in attending the function, please email jo.mcdonald@movethroughlife.org.au.  Nomination procedures and other details will be announced mid-year.

More information about the Move Through Life Inc Board can be found at www.movethroughlife.org.au in the "Management and Staffing" section, including the Board Charter.

That's all folks.  I hope you've enjoyed the read, and that we'll see you at Wallis Mitcham Cinema on Friday 6 June.

regards
Jo
